Software #9 – YouTube

Use in Educational Setting –

YouTube is by no means a new tool to the education world but it is still a phenomenal tool that teachers have come to love. With nearly an endless array of videos on almost every topic a teacher can find a variety of videos. Showing videos in class is a very useful tool in education because it can show students information that may not have been available without YouTube. Students can also access YouTube and take the learning into their own hands if they don’t understand an assignment or content presented to them in class.

Cost, Registration Issues –

YouTube is another fabulous free program that doesn’t even require registration. One potential issue you may run into with YouTube is the fact that some schools have blocked it from usage. There are alternatives to this through TeacherTube but again some school will have video sharing programs blocked.

Useful in what content and value to classroom –

Showing videos can be a useful tool in any class at any level. Throughout my teaching experiences a video has become a staple for introducing new topics. Showing a YouTube video can be as simple as replaying a commercial for students to view on an important piece of information or going as far as showing a Presidential Inauguration in class for students to witness history over and over again. The uses of YouTube are only limited to the imagination of the teacher and students.

Meta-cognition and YouTube –

YouTube provides a successful path to meta-cognition. YouTube supports meta-cognition through direct exposure to a unique learning tool. YouTube directly drops the user into the program and forces the learner watch and absorbs the information being presented. Although this is becoming a popular tool to students it is still a unique and usable tool for an educational purpose.
